Tips for the Major Online Skill-Based Card Games

Card Games are one of the more popular genres of online skill gaming, and will be instantly familiar to many newcomers, consisting of well-known games such as Solitaire, FreeCell and Hearts, or close variants of these. They are an ideal starting point for skill gaming, as card games generally are easy to understand and learn, and many people will have had experience of games like those mentioned above on their personal or work computers.

Solitaire

Although a simple game to understand, solitaire can be difficult to complete. The goal is to move all 52 cards to the 'foundation', by removing cards from the tableau and the deck. Cards in the tableau can be placed on other cards in the tableau by building in a downwards direction and alternating colors, for example a red 7 can be placed on a black 8. Moving cards to the foundation is simple - once an ace has been placed on the foundation, a two of the same suit can be placed on it, followed by a three, all the way up to king, which is the highest rank.

Solitaire

A few practice games will give a newcomer to solitaire a firm grasp of the required strategies, however there are a few points that need to be remembered in order to consistently achieve high scores. This starts with the first move of the game - always take the top card from the deck before moving anything on the tableau, as it can increase the options available at your disposal.

A common mistake is making a move which doesn't give any immediate benefit. An example could be moving cards to leave an empty space on the tableau, but not having a king readily available to fill this space. Firstly, it wastes time, and nearly all online solitaire games award points based on your speed. Secondly it reduces the number of cards you are exposing, and this is not ideal for the following reason - the more cards you have available, the more chance you will be able to use them.

FreeCell

FreeCell isn't as widely available on skill game sites as Solitaire. Similar to solitaire, it has a foundation pile for putting the cards in ascending number order by suit, and a tableau which is arranged into eight columns. It also has four 'free cells' where you can store cards from the tableau in order to place others onto the foundation. Similar rules regarding stacking cards apply.

FreeCell

The most important thing to know when playing this game is the value of the free cells - they are precious and should not be used unless absolutely necessary. In addition, you should look for Aces and low-ranked cards among the pile of cards in the tableau - planning a way to get these cards out will greatly increase your chances of getting a high score.

Note that once a card has been placed in the foundation, it cannot be removed, so make sure you dont place a card there when it needs to be used to open up more of the tableau. As well as this, you should try to create an empty tableau as soon as possible, as this is like an extra free cell but with the added bonus of being able to store a sequence of cards.
